St Mary's Church Tower
Works will commence on the tower at St Mary's on 14 May, with 13 weeks of scaffolding within a 15 week period. Unfortunately there will be no bell ringing after 2 June right through until around Christmas. Please take care around the works for the duration.
As with previous years, there will only be one pew sheet to cover the whole summer period, so there will not be another pew sheet issued until 9th September. All relevant service details are included and some key events. Normal format will resume in September.
Enjoy the summer, whatever you have planned and I shall be back in the office on 4th September.
Trio Trek for the Tower
St. Mary’s Church tower is now in need of repair and funds are needed urgently to pay for significant work to be undertaken. Beverley, Rachel and Alan will be walking St. Cuthbert's Way in Northumberland in September - a total of 100Kms - over 4 days. If anyone would like to sponsor them they would be very grateful for any help you can give to this cause.
St Mary's Pastoral Flowers
The Pastoral Team would like to invite all members of the congregation to take part in a new scheme to maintain contact with the housebound and ill, both church members and village residents.
Each week someone would provide a small bunch of flowers to be placed in a vase at the front of the church (by the 'Mary' statue) which will be taken, along with a notice sheet, if appropriate, to a housebound person with an expression of our love and concern. This would not be an extended visit and ideally could be immediately after the service.
A separate Pastoral Flowers fund is to be set up to pay for these - although flowers from the garden might be just as suitable. A list of people to receive the flowers will be drawn up and, if we have a lot of volunteers, it might only be a couple of times a year that you would be involved. Suggestions for people to receive flowers would be welcomed and it will include those who are prayed for on Sundays.
More details will be given at the APCM. Please see Maggie Hawkins if you are interested.
Remembrance Day 2018
To commemorate 100 years since the end of World War One in November, St Mary’s has planned to create a display of poppies cascading down from the church tower. To achieve this, members of the congregation have begun knitting poppies to fill the display, but we would welcome help from those in the village of Walkern and, indeed, further afield who have the time and skill to make a poppy to contribute to the display. We would also welcome donations of RED & BLACK wool (DK is preferred).
For those of you who would like to knit poppies, the following easy pattern is what people have been using.
Summer Songs of Praise at Walkern URC

The NOISE Day: St Mary's in the Community
Do you know of someone who needs a little practical help with gardening, decorating, rubbish clearance etc. Please get in touch with Beverley Harlow 07881 588662 or someone at church. A team of volunteers will be ready on 8 Sepember to make a NOISE to help the community of Walkern. Extra volunteers are also welcome.
Bike and Hike
We hope some church members will be cycling around churches in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire being sponsored for the Herts and Beds Historic Churches Trust. This is a charity that has supported us many times in our need for help to maintain and repair our Grade 1 listed building, so we try to help them when we can. Sponsorship forms will be at the back of church in late August/early September.
